Herbert Matter’s works influence New york. He used
objective imagery and scale swift.
The New York
club is centered around pentagram. If you’re in the club you can do no wrong.
Exaggerated scale and trajectory. He
comes to the US 1936. Herbert worked for a number of years with Charles Ray
Eames. Worked for Knoll. Embracing negative art forms and allowing the chair to
be art. Modernism gives us a new way of thinking.
Modernism was
very slow to take hold.
Worked for
Container Corp. of America designing cardboard boxes. Making millions of
dollars literally making these boxes because they didn’t exist before.

Lester Beal is a Kansas city native. Moves to NYC for
the Corporate move. He really liked playing with visual contrast. Had a bizarre
love for wood type. Does a lot of work for the Rural Electrification
Administration. Interested in communicating without using a whole bunch of
information in his posters. Loves arrows.
WPA is the
largest new deal agency. Flood of people coming to America from Europe and
hiring them to work at WPA.

Herbert Matter made a great influence in the world with his modern artwork, really showcasing it in the NY world's fair. Then when he met his love, his real love! She was someone who loved him more than his artwork but was showcased in much of his art. The poster he created that won many awards to support him son really shows his popularity and his genius. The work he created is so different from the work we do today. Although there are similar concepts but the process is completely different and unoriginal. Back then everything was done in the real world with hands rather than the people of today who use computers and their generators to create things that are very similar to past pieces. It's so sad that he really couldn't enjoy anything else but his work until he died April 19, 1984. I will forever know this date simply because my mom's birthday is April 19, 1969 but also the TY beanie baby Quackers the duck is also born the same day.

How many years did Matter teach at the school?
If Matter was to teach today, what would his knowledge reflect to in todays classes? Would it be advanced design or a beginners understanding type of class?
